About Us

Catholic Medical Association Guild History

Since the creation of the first local guild in Boston in the early 20th century, the CMA’s history has been steeped in the rich guild tradition. Guilds provide fellowship, education, opportunities to serve the local Church and public, and a base for medical students and residents to find guidance. Local guilds are essential for providing education, mutual support, service, and witness—by and for physicians and healthcare professionals—across the United States.

The DC guild of the CMA was founded in September 2014 by a group of local physicians, including Dr. Marguerite Duane and Dr. Mary Andrews, our first two guild presidents.  Since its founding, the DC guild has hosted numerous retreats, lectures, summer picnics and has led CMA members from all over the country in the National March for Life.  The DC Guild celebrated its first White Mass in 2023 and provided services for a local parish health clinic.  The guild gladly welcomes new members!  Please contact [email protected] for more information.

Our Patron Saint

St. Giuseppe Moscotti

(1880-1927) was a physician who practiced in Naples, Italy in the early twentieth century.  Known as “the holy physician of Naples,” he served his patients with diligence and respect and embraced a holistic approach to patient care that included care of the soul.  He was also a dedicated teacher of young physicians.  He died suddenly at the age of 46 after attending Mass and making rounds at the hospital.  He was canonized in 1987 and his feast day is November 16th.

Remember that you must treat not only bodies, but also souls, with counsel that appeals to their minds and hearts.” — St. Giuseppe Moscati
